Everyone's favorite on-screen cowboy has been chosen by The History Channel to star in a new docuseries that delves deeply into the "Wild West

The actor will host and produce Kevin Costner's The West with the assistance of renowned author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

The eight-episode television series, according to an A&E press release, aims to "transcend the clich├ęs and myths" associated with the American frontier and, from a variety of angles, 

capture the spirit of opportunity, adventure, and peril through the diverse, complex characters, and untold stories that defined the era and continue to shape our country today." 

Despite rumors that Yellowstone might cease after season 5, Costner has been producing a lot of cowboy-themed material this year

The actor has been filming a four-film Western epic titled Horizon in addition to anchoring a docuseries on Yellowstone Park last year
