Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ has died at 89

Nichelle Nichols, who pioneered Black women acting on television as the stunning, no-nonsense communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original "Star Trek" TV series, 

passed away on Sunday, according to family members. She was 89 years old.

Nichols died on Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico, according to her son Kyle Johnson.
